Japan 2024

    Collection Trips During ICE 2024
    Kyoto, Japan

Participated in two separate collection trips in 1) Shugakuin Kirarazaka Kyoto with the lab of Dr. Yuta Nakase using light traps at night and 2) the Ware Lab at Ohara Kyoto along Takano River guided by Dr. Yoshitaka Tsubaki. Targeted general Insecta and Arachnida, with a personal focus on Strepsiptera. Specimens collected have been deposited in the AMNH entomological collections for future work. Included in this series are photos of the conference, plus various insect zoos and museum exhibits from institutions in Tokyo.

    Mexico 2024

      Self-Led Collection Trip
      Biósfera Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico

Planned and headed a two-week, three-person trip for data/specimen collection related to my dissertation. Our goal was to survey for Strepsiptera in the tropical forests of Veracruz, using various methods such as light trapping and sweep-netting. We specifically targeted Caenocholax fenyesi females in their cricket hosts and sought to verify the presence of Triozocera mexicana in peanut burrowing bugs. This collecting effort was funded by the Maxwell/Hanrahan fund, which supports “biology fieldwork …to provide early scientists with experiences that can really make a difference in their careers.”

      Guyana 2023

        AMNH Expedition
        Karanambu, Rupununi, Guyana

Collected general Insecta and Arachnida for the American Museum of Natural History's invertebrate collection in the Rupununi region of Guyana over the course of two weeks. Environments included savanna, wet forest, wetlands, and forest islands. Specimens will be incorporated into the AMNH collections for use in future scientific study.

        Mexico 2023

SSB 2023 + Chamela Station Workshop on Phylogenetics and Comparative Methods
          Chamela Field Station, Jalisco, Mexico

Participated in a complete, week-long immersion into the world of phylogenetic inference and the comparative method while exploring the biodiversity of Chamela, Jalisco. Instructors included international leaders in the field who provided the theoretical foundation and practical tools to formulate and answer biological questions with a phylogenetic perspective. The workshop culminated in a final presentation synthesizing all methods discussed in the context of each student's work.

          Puerto Rico 2022

            SACNAS NDiSTEM Bioblitz
El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico

As an activity of the SACNAS National Diversity in STEM Conference, explored the biodiversity of El Yunque tropical rainforest and the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico. Surveyed insects, photographing and documenting them on iNaturalist and other natural history databases.

            Colombia 2022

Dragonfly Society of America GEODE Project Workshop
              Parque Nacional Natural Tatamá, Colombia

Assisted in coordination and instruction during a week-long intensive workshop funded by GEODE (Genealogy and Ecology of Odonata) in the Tatamá National Park of the Northern Andes. Instructed specifically in collection, curation, and microscopy techniques, while aiding with genomic extractions and Odonate identification. Workshop participants included 30 professors, postdoctoral students, doctoral and masters students, and undergraduate students from across Central and South America.
